My Healing and Recovery are largely attributed to the invaluable opportunities that NAMI of San Luis Obispo County has provided me.

Prior to being introduced to NAMI's programs, I struggled with chronic Depression and Anxiety.  I received my mental health diagnosis of borderline personality disorder in 2005 - eleven years after losing my beloved late husband to metastatic cancer.  As a young widow, I participated in several different bereavement groups and even attended a variety of "Recovery Anonymous" meetings.  I continuously found myself Lost and Confused with these experiences due to the stigma I encountered once it became known in these groups that I was suffering with mental health symptoms.  Although it seemed impossible to find at the time, I was in great search of a group that made sense to me and would set me on the path to Recovery.

When I first attended NAMI's free "Peer to Peer" group - I instantly knew that I had finally found my place in this world.  I was very comfortable being amongst those who had also been highly challenged with symptoms of anxiety and depression.  In addition to learning so much about mental health and well-being, I developed a wonderful social network of peers to connect with whenever I just needed to "bend an ear" or reach for a compassionate hand.  I also discovered that I had a lot to give to others in need of emotional support and encouragement.

I soon became interested in other opportunities that NAMI provides free of charge - and before I knew it I was "hooked."  The more I learned and interacted with NAMI Supporters - the stronger my healing and recovery grew.  I have since participated as a Lead Presenter of "In Our Own Voice" and "Ending the Silence" - two (also free of charge) incredibly powerful mental health education programs sponsored by NAMI.

"In our Own Voice" is a formal, structured presentation of personal histories by those of us who know firsthand what it means to live with a mental illness. "Ending the Silence" is a program for high school students to become aware of and educated about mental health.  Learning about mental health symptoms and diagnoses enables these teenagers to better recognize and help others in their lives who may be in need of emotional support and encouragement.

Serving as Vice President on the San Luis Obispo County's NAMI Board of Directors is now providing me with even greater meaning in my life.  I am forever indebted to NAMI for my continued mental health Recovery. Please consider making a donation in the amount of your choice - or better yet, participating in NAMI's annual fundraiser - "Beautiful Minds Rally and Walkathon" - which will be in Meadow Park on the morning of Saturday, May 5th.  All of the money raised enables NAMI to provide programs like "Peer to Peer," "In our Own Voice" and "Ending the Silence" throughout San Luis Obispo County.

I am deeply grateful for your consideration and generosity.
